Description
Here's an original 8" x 10" publicity photo of the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra of St. Louis, signed by in fountain pen by James Jeter and dated March 12, 1936. Saxophonist Hayes Pillars is visible at the far left of the front row.Jeter's inscription -- to the extent I can read it -- says: "To my pal Alice -- from the Denksie -- more power to you
. . . James Jeter of Jeter Pillars Orchestra, St. Louis Mo. 3-10-36."
Saxophonists Jeter and Pillars, who had been members of the Alphonso Trent band, organized their group in January 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio. On July 4, 1934, the orchestra came to play a six-week engagement at the Club Plantation in St. Louis. They were so popular they stayed eleven years. Trumpeters Harry "Sweets" Edison and Peanuts Holland, bassist Jimmy Blanton, drummers Jo Jones, Sid Catlett and Kenny Clarke, guitarist Floyd Smith, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest, and alto saxophonist Chris Woods passed through their ranks. The group also played at the Club Riviera on Delmar Blvd as well as at the Apollo Theater in New York, and at jazz clubs in Chicago.
Overall, the photo is in excellent condition. The only flaws are to areas outside the image, namely: pin holes in three of the four corners and a 1/4-inch square missing from the lower left-hand corner. My scan makes it appear that there is some kind of flaw in the upper left-hand corner, but that is only glare. On the back, there is a photographer's stamp including the NRA eagle.
